Unai Emery has been SACKED as Arsenal manager after a disastrous start to the season

Unai Emery has been sacked as manager of Arsenal after a disastrous start to the season that has seen Arsenal off to its worst start to a Premier League season and enduring its worst run of form in 27 years.

Emery, who took over from the club’s longest-tenured coach Arsene Wenger 18 months ago, has been a divisive figure at the Emirates particularly following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League last season.

The Spaniard’s decision to hold a player vote for their captain this season, which eventuated in the polarising Granit Xhaka emerging with the armband, may have proved to be the beginning of the end as Xhaka’s poor performances resulted in the Swiss international taunting and swearing at fans before throwing the captain’s armband in disgust and disappearing down the tunnel after being substituted in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in October.

Arsenal and Emery never recovered from the situation, going seven games without a win, the worst period of results the club has experienced since 1992.

Their 18 points from 13 games so far this Premier League season is also the worst in their history in England’s top flight, a start which sees them already eight points adrift of the top four.

Club legend and assistant coach Freddie Ljungberg has been named as interim manager and will take over for the weekend’s trip to Norwich.
